DRILL 2: TACTICAL DODGEBALL
(Real science: Reaction time and motor coordination
improve with unpredictable movement training.)
Rex slammed open a crate filled with dodgeballs.
“These are foam-coated,
student-safe, and legally tested,” he said.
Then he pulled out
a glowing red one.
“This one is not.”
Students screamed.
AMY & LUCY
Dodged gracefully.
Calculated trajectories.
Moved like trained ninjas.
RAY & ETHAN
Ray screamed and ran in circles.
Ethan tried hiding behind a cone.
The cone was smaller than his left foot.
BONK.
Ray took a hit to the back.
“AGHHH! I HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED!” he shouted.
“Son,” Coach Rex said, “you weren’t even IN the game yet.”
BONK.
Ethan took a ball to the forehead.
“Ethan,” Lucy sighed, “stop standing still.”
“I THOUGHT IF I STAYED STILL, THEY COULDN’T SEE ME!”
“That works for T-Rexes, not dodgeball.”
DRILL 3: TRICK-SHOT OBSTACLE
COURSE
(Real science: Strength + agility circuits improve
neuromuscular coordination.)
Rex led them to a wild obstacle
course:
- tires
- rope swings
- balance beams
- basketball hoops
- mini trampolines
- two inflatable snowmen (???)
“YOUR MISSION,” Rex barked,
“IS TO COMPLETE THE COURSE AND SCORE A SHOT AT THE END. FAILURE MEANS 20
PUSH-UPS!”
Amy sped through like a prime athlete.
Lucy executed each section with perfect form.
Ray tripped into the tire pit and emerged wearing three of them like necklaces.
Ethan tried the rope swing, spun in the wrong direction, and launched himself
into a bush.
Coach Rex clapped proudly.
“THAT’S THE MOST IMPRESSIVE FAILURE I’VE SEEN SINCE MY FIRST
YEAR OF TEACHING!”
Amy landed the final basketball shot effortlessly.
Lucy sank a clean swish.
Ray hurled the ball so hard it flew backward and hit Rex in
the knee.
“THAT WAS A TRICK SHOT!” Rex declared.
“A TERRIBLE ONE. BUT STILL A TRICK SHOT.”
Ethan threw the ball straight up…
It disappeared into a cloud…
Then came down and hit him on the head.
“Gravity hates me,” he whispered as he fell over.
