π§ LLoC Writing Tricks — The Haunted Halloween Mayhem
✏️ a 6-part creative writing framework that helps students learn story-building skills step by step. Each “trick” teaches one essential element — from crafting vivid sentences to creating believable characters and hilarious dialogue.
✍️ 1. Building Better
Sentences — Chaos-Loaded Openings
What it means:
Start with a line that promises instant disaster. A strong opening sets the
tone: peaceful Halloween? Not with Ray and Ethan.
From the story:
“It was October 31st — Halloween night — and chaos was already brewing before
Ethan even put on his costume.”
Try it:
Write an opening line where something normal (holiday, birthday, school day) is
immediately ruined by one character’s terrible idea.
π« 2. Character Magic —
Chaos Duo Energy
What it means:
Make each character’s personality bounce off the others. Amy & Lucy = calm,
competent, logical. Ray & Ethan = walking disasters. Their contrast creates
the comedy.
From the story:
Amy: “So basically… they’ll stay off all night.”
Lucy: “You’re just inventing new ways to make OSHA cry.”
Try it:
Create a scene where two smart characters react to one incredibly dumb
invention — their frustration makes the moment funnier.
π¨ 3. Description &
Imagery — Cartoon Horror Visuals
What it means:
Use funny, exaggerated descriptions to turn spooky settings into chaotic
disasters. The images should feel like a Halloween cartoon gone wrong.
From the story:
“One guy fainted near the ticket booth and rolled straight into the cotton
candy stand.”
Try it:
Describe a spooky moment where something that should be terrifying
becomes hilarious because of a character’s reaction.
π 4. Plot & Story
Flow — Escalation by Stupidity
What it means:
Each chapter raises the chaos:
• DIY mummy costumes →
• Haunted rides →
• Zombie laser tag →
• Mystery potion →
• Maze disaster →
• Fireworks + electrocution finale
Everything builds toward a bigger, louder, stupider climax.
From the story:
“Ethan’s lightbulb costume had caught a stray spark and lit up like a Christmas
tree.”
Try it:
Plan your story so each new scene adds more chaos than the last — like stacking
disasters until they explode.
π¬ 5. Dialogue &
Humor — Panic Punchlines
What it means:
Funny dialogue uses panic, sarcasm, and confident stupidity. Halloween lines
become even funnier when characters desperately try (and fail) to stay cool.
From the story:
“Bro, if I die, clear my browser history!”
“Tell my marshmallows… I love them…”
Try it:
Write a short dialogue where someone reacts dramatically to something harmless
— like a fake spider — while everyone else stays calm.
π‘ 6. Creativity &
Critical Thinking — Wrong Logic Wins Again
What it means:
Ray & Ethan’s bad decisions come from confidence, not malice. Their awful
thinking creates perfect comedy moments.
From the story:
Ethan: “Maybe that’s why it tasted like batteries.”
Amy: “You drank glow-stick fluid?!”
Try it:
Create a character who drinks or uses something “mysterious” without reading
the label — and let the consequences be ridiculous, not dangerous.
π LLoC Challenge
(Bonus):
Write a Halloween scene where someone’s costume malfunctions so badly it
becomes part of the haunted attraction… and scares other people by accident.
