Chapter 3: The Clown Warehouse
Just as they began to recover, Ray’s phone buzzed. It was a
message from his cousin Jake: “Hey, can you help me move some boxes from the
old storage warehouse? Should only take 30 minutes.”
Ray grinned. “Free exercise!”
Ethan frowned. “Last time you said that, we accidentally
stole a shopping cart.”
“That was community service, dude.”
They drove to the warehouse in Ethan’s car—a rusted machine
held together by duct tape, stickers, and the power of denial. When they
arrived, Jake was nowhere in sight. The door was half open, and inside it was
dark.
Ethan hesitated. “You sure this is the right place?”
Ray shrugged. “Only one way to find out.”
They stepped inside and flicked on a light switch.
Instantly, they were surrounded by hundreds of squeaky clown mannequins.
Ethan froze. “Ray… why are there clowns?”
“I don’t know,” Ray whispered. “But one of them blinked.”
They turned slowly. One of the “clowns” had
blinked—because it wasn’t a mannequin. It was a security guard dressed for a
circus-themed kids’ event. “Who are you two?” he barked.
Ethan panicked. “We’re… maintenance! Yeah! Clown
maintenance.”
“Clown maintenance?” the guard repeated.
“Yup!” Ray added, grabbing a random rubber chicken. “We
check the squeak levels for safety regulations.”
The guard squinted. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
Ethan whispered, “Run.”
They sprinted out, knocking over six clown mannequins, two
boxes labeled “DO NOT TOUCH,” and one mysterious fog machine that filled the
warehouse with purple mist. Alarms went off. The car refused to start. Ethan
smacked the steering wheel. “COME ON!”
Ray jumped out and started pushing the car himself. “We’re
escaping Fast & Furious: Budget Edition!”
They eventually made it home, gasping for air and covered in
confetti (no one knew where it came from). Ethan collapsed on the couch. “Every
time we hang out, something illegal happens.”
“Not illegal,” Ray corrected, “just…mildly frowned upon.”
