Chapter 7: Freedom, Kind Of
They ran outside like toddlers escaping bath time. The crow from earlier watched them again, shaking its head.
“Bro,” Ethan said between gasps, “I think we made history. We defeated a ghost.”
Ray glared. “No, we annoyed her into quitting.”
They turned to look at the mansion one last time. A faint light flickered in the window. Then a ghostly whisper drifted through the wind:
“Next time… bring cheddar.”
Ethan shivered. “Noted.”
Ray groaned. “We’re never doing this again.”
Ethan smirked. “What if they double the prize?”
“Then I’m doubling your funeral budget.”
Epilogue:
The next day, they told everyone at school they survived “a full-scale demonic possession.”
In reality, they lasted forty minutes, lost all their snacks, and emotionally traumatized a Victorian ghost with bad jokes and dairy products.
Later that night, Ethan opened his backpack—and found the same slice of cheese sitting neatly wrapped in plastic.
He blinked. “Uh, Ray?”
Ray looked over.
The cheese had tiny letters carved into it.
“Till next time. – Mrs. Blackwood 👻🧀”
They screamed again.
And somewhere deep inside the mansion, faint piano music played—accompanied by a ghostly giggle and the smell of mozzarella.
The End (for now).
