Dr. Mayhem's Science Class 2

Lesson 2: Cavitation (LLoC: REAL PHYSICS + FLUID DYNAMICS)

He wheeled out a transparent tube filled with water and a spinning propeller.

“When a propeller spins too fast in water, the pressure drops so quickly it creates cavitation bubbles. These collapse violently. Real phenomenon. Real damage. Happens in boat engines and submarines.”

He switched it on.

The water flashed with tiny white bubbles.

Amy’s eyes widened. “Those tiny bubbles can break metal?”

“Yes! When they collapse, they create shockwaves up to hundreds of atmospheres. It’s like tiny grenades hitting the blade.”

Ethan leaned forward.
“Can it break a watermelon?”

Dr. Mayhem grinned like a supervillain.

“I’m so proud of you.”

He replaced the propeller model with a watermelon suspended in water—
and turned the machine up.

BWOOMP!

The melon imploded inward like a crushed soda can.

Ray whispered, “That was horrifying.”
Lucy whispered back, “I want to do it again.”

Lesson 3: Resonance Frequency (REAL STRUCTURAL PHYSICS)

Dr. Mayhem wheeled out a metal platform with speakers.

“When something vibrates at its resonance frequency, even small forces become HUGE.”

Amy nodded. “Like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse?”

Dr. Mayhem sparkled with joy.

“YES! A student who actually KNOWS things!”

He placed a watermelon on the vibrating plate.

“As I increase frequency—”

hum humm HUMMM HUUUMMMMM

The melon began to wobble…

wobble…

wobble—

SPLURT!

It burst like a biological water balloon.

Students screamed.
Ethan applauded.
Ray wiped seeds off his forehead.

“That,” Dr. Mayhem said, “is structural resonance.”
